I go to UC Berkeley and i intend on getting a business admin degree from the Haas undergraduate program. I also have enough other prereqs to double major either in Political Science, Mass Communications, or Econ. I was wondering which extra major would help me out both with landing an IB job right out of college and helping me do well in investment banking. Would the double major even be worth it?

arts history

Do you know if you can double major within the business school? Like Finance + Accounting? That would probably be best, but if not, definitely either Economics or Math as a second major. I would do Math, Econ is considered more of a “soft” skill.

lol definitely don’t add accounting…

I’m assuming that you’ll already be taking accounting or have the opportunity to take a fair amount of accounting classes. I would try math/stats, info systems, or something totally non-related. I agree that econ is a little too general, but Berkeley has a great reputation for econ. Just don’t add accounting.

do you think a minor in math or stats would be fine? It would take me 5 years in UG to double major in math and business. Do you think that this minor would really make a difference in terms of recruiting? I don’t want to waste my time on it if I don’t have to.

i agree with art history. it carries more weight if the degree is from Princeton though, so i don’t know how UC Berk’s program stacks up

^pretty bad attempt at sarcasm

What the heck is wrong with accounting? If you can, by all means graduate in 4 years. School is expensive enough and the Math major will have only marginal benefits. Most acct classes probably overlap with Finance so you should be good.

Lots of Wharton kids interested in Banking double in Finance and Accounting. The difference is that a concentration is only 4 courses, so 4 extra courses (one semester worth) really doesn’t add any extra time to a curriculum. It is good to have a strong foundation of Financial Accounting though, which can be achieved from an accounting major.

At Haas, you can concentrate on just finance or accounting, but instead only get a BS in Business Admin. I could just take extra finance and accounting courses. Should i just do this instead of double majoring in something like math, statistics, or poli sci? Will recruiters look at my transcript to see these extra finance/ accounting courses, or do they just mainly look at major and gpa?

*i meant you can’t do concentrations in finance or accounting. sorry
