Good, Liberal Arts Colleges for B+ students that are CHEAP

I do not think the $30,000 posted for University of MInnesota is correct.

Here is a listing of tuition and fees for UM: http://onestop.umn.edu/pdf/tuition_2009-10.pdf

Another section of their website shows this:

Academic year: 2009-10
Residency: Non-resident
Enrollment: Undergraduate
First year: 2008-2009 or later
Expense category Yearly amount Breakdown
Tuition/fees $15,466 $7,733/semester
Books/supplies $1,000 $500/semester
Room/board $7,392 $821/month
Transportation $194 $6/week
Personal/miscellaneous $2,000 $67/week
Total $26,052 $13,026/semester

Notice this includes $2,000 “personal”. I suppose some would be more frugal.

University of Mary Washington (VA).

Not sure about aid for international students but College of Charleston has been great for my B student and as a public LAC, costs are lower than most privates.

Colorado College is a fairly selective private LAC (US News #24) in a mid-sized city at the edge of the Rocky Mountains. Last year it awarded an average of $44,966 to 56 international students. That appears to be a rather high rate, because the school only has 69 degree-seeking internationals. So maybe they are trying to attract more.

I should have looked at the row that said U of MN admitted fall 2008 or later. They significantly dropped prices for out of staters last year. Thanks.

UNC-Asheville is a stellar school and very inexpensive. Also Belmont Abbey College.

Charleston has a cost of slightly over 35,000 dollars according to CollegeBoard. That’s quite high for a ‘cheap’ school…

Colorado College seems like a good school but it has too high standards for my taste. I could get in but I’d be average there at best. Probably great for intellectual growth, not so much for grades. And I want both and I need to balance both, too.

Asheville is a tier 3 school according to US News, but I admit I’ve been looking at it. Now, I personally don’t care about prestige. But some do, and if it passes the test to get into good grad & law schools eventually in the toptier grad schools in the northeast primarily, then I’m for it. But does it?

As for Belmont Abbey; thanks! It was great man.

Flagler College in Florida is cheap, plus offers aid.

Suggestions for the OP-

Knox College
Ohio Wesleyan
Illinois Wesleyan
Drake University
Kalamazoo College

Check out the “Colleges that change lives” book. It fits the bill for the OP.

SUNY Geneseo is supposed to be a quality LAC-like public in NY. Cost all in is about what Minnesota’s is – $25,000. Might be tough to get into though with a B+ average.

There are about 5,500 students and it is ranked #12 in the northeast “Masters Univeristy” category… meaning they don’t offer Ph.D. track programs.

Drake seems really good. Flagler… I’m unsure about the student body as they all seem like slacking surfers after reading the reviews of **************s.com

Thanks for the tips!
