I can’t find any articles on this but I’ve heard that at some state schools strapped for cash they force you to take a week of unpaid vacation to cut salary costs. Maybe I’m wrong.

Maybe secretaries, supporting staff, etc.

Professor’s (assistant, associate and full) have a teaching load. Maybe 1,2 or 3 classes a semester. They also have to do research and publish. I’ve never heard of a professor, whatever rank, having vacation time.

Very few careers are recession proof. As a member of the healthcare industry, I can tell you that even hospitals are starting to cut staff, and health care is supposedly as “recession-proof” as you can get. Teachers are also getting laid off.

The only thing I can think of off of the top of my head is working for the federal government. With the whole stimulus package, the government will only increase, not shrink in the coming years.

“so, is law a fairly lucrative, recession-proof career?”

Maybe I missed something, so if this was sarcastic, sorry.

If not, NO NO NO, ha. I’ve heard a lot of people say things like “the economy is bad so i’ve decided on law school”. Bad idea. Lucrative? Depends on your field. Recession proof? Man I know about a dozen lawyers looking for their first job. My gfs godmother is one of the most successful pharm-lawyers in the country and she advised me against going to law school.

Then again my choices were outside the t14 schools, which a lot of people tell you are the only path to a law career right now.

I was listening to news radio on my way to work… wish I paid more attention than focusing on how ****ed off I was to be sitting in traffic because some moron ran out of gas on the freeway…

Anyways… I digress

They were discussing some report highlighting a dramatic increase in salaries for government jobs (finance) that were making them actually “competitive” with the private sector.

Unfortunately, that’s all I really caught of the segment. Maybe when I’m not so tired I’ll go dig up some more info.

Worthless post… I know… oh well

re: law schools

One of my sisters works for Paul Hastings (large firm). Apparently they were laying off even some of the partners. So it’s definitely not recession proof. My other sister whose in law school currently barely managed to get a 1L summer associate internship. The majority of her class was not so lucky.

Definitely NOT recession proof

False.
