-- UC San Francisco, and Cal: good to see public schools do so well on the international arena. As an alum, I have a deep affection for the University of California - truly one of the world's great educational institutions. Go Bears!

My S toured Cal and will be applying there. He’s interesting in interdisiplinary sciences, seemingly leaning towards physics. However, he said when he was applying to Cal that he’d likely list chemistry as his intended major, and remembered what the tour guide had said regarding the prowess there, including the fact the chemistry had it’s own school at Cal, not just a department.

Economics

This is the fifth economics Nobel for UC Berkeley – three were awarded in the past nine years

Medicine

The bulk of the work for which Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and John Szostak won this year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine took place at the University of California, Berkeley, when Blackburn was a professor of molecular and cell biology and Greider was her graduate student.

And UCLA
Elinor Ostrom has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
Ostrom received her political science degree ('54), her master’s ('62) and her doctorate ('65) at UCLA. She is the first woman to receive the prize in economics since it was established in 1969.

Carol Greider also received her undergrad degree in Biology from UCSB’s School of Creative Studies.

The way things are going, pretty soon everybody in California with a job will have a Nobel Prize.

j/k - I love UC. I went to UCSD.
