Good places to stay?

We’re going back to see William and Mary - it’s made the final list but we’ve never see it. Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay, preferably within walking distance of the campus?

There are many nice places to stay near W&M, but since the school purchased the Hospitality House for student housing/parking, it’s hard to find nice hotels within walking distance. If you’re up for a 1.5 mile one-way hike, lots of good options are on Richmond Road: we’ve stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn and the Springhill Suites recently and had good experiences. The Residence Inn next to the Springhill has apparently been renovated within the last few years - good, because it was wretchedly run-down when we stayed there in 2011.

I would advise you to avoid (like the plague) the hotels just north of the school on Richmond - the Day’s Inn, Super 8, Travelodge, and Sleep Inn. Not that those brands are known for a nice stay in any case - but they are within walking distance. There’s a Fairfield Inn in that area that we’ve never stayed at - it’s walkable and just renovated, so maybe a good possibility.

There are many bed and breakfasts in the area that get great reviews. These tend to be expensive but several are within a few blocks of the school.

Another option might be one of the Colonial Williamsburg hotels. They run shuttles that take you to Merchants Square, which is across the street from the school.

agree that the closest hotels on Richmond Road are not the best. The closest nice hotels are the CW ones, but I think they are all pretty expensive (if that matters to you).

B&B’s also an option, but expensive.

I would recommend something on Richmond Road that is a ~5 minute drive. W&M campus is pretty compact so you can walk anywhere from wherever you park.

Fife and Drum Inn is right on the corner of campus. It’s nice to stay close to campus because then you can walk around at different times of the day and get the real feel of what it’s like to be there at school. Make sure not to miss going to the Cheese Shop, Pierce’s Pit BBQ and Mad About Chocolate. The Wren Chapel often has organ concerts Saturday mornings. Students hang out at the restaurants along Richmond Road so it’s a nice idea to eat there too.
