I wanted to know what constitutes a good recommendation letter?
My teacher allowed me to have a peek before they were sent but I don't know how good they were.
Should recommendations be very candid(mine had some anecdotes)?
Do phrases like 'he is the best student i have taught in my twenty year career' or 'he is diligence personified' look a little to pretentious.
Should the teacher also be a very good writer? or is the content more imp than language?

IT sounds like you got a good rec

No. Yale wants teachers to be candid and takes their opinions into careful consideration. Anecdotes which back up statements such as this are the most helpful.
