I have NYU, Georgia Tech, UMichigan, University of Maryland, and the University of Toronto on my list of schools which I’m willing to do computer science major, and I want to be able to get a good job in the tech field-looking for Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, etc-but out of all of these schools, which one would be the best to get me into a tech job in the companies I mentioned? Also, which of those schools in the best in computer science? Thank you!
All of those are really equal as far as I know. Beyond a few select top CS schools, most have about equal shots.
PS: If you are looking specifically for those companies and those only, it’s going to be a rough life. There are plenty of jobs out there, but the big companies will always be particularly competitive.
from best to worst based on quality
umich, georgia tech are tied
Univ of maryland and NYU are tied
Then idk about of univ of toronto
From best to worst based on jobs:
Nyu is hands done the best due to location(NYC)
Then comes univ of maryland
Then gtech
Then univ of michigan
BUT in computer science where you go to schools matters little to what you can actually do when you graduate
So just do your thing, doesnt matter what school
@chubby2016 that seems like a nice list but why would you put maryland second in terms of job based, is it because of washington dc?
As was mentioned above, trying to rank undergraduate programs from best to worst is a relatively meaningless task… The CS curriculum is relatively standard and as long as all the major courses are available, then you can get a good education. As for job prospects, most big companies will recruit at the stronger schools so you should be able to have access to the major companies. It is the smaller, more regional companies, that will be your best chance for an internship or first job. Here it is always good to be in a major metropolitan area or at a major state university. Once you have had a first job, the name of the university on your diploma is relatively meaningless.

Your schools are not on the lists.
@hammad22
yes, UMD is close to washington DC where there a lot of cyber security related cs jobs and cs jobs in general
@4kidsdad The percentage may be up but at schools of course, but that doesn’t mean a good portion of people go elsewhere and end up in the same place. It’s a hard job to land no matter where you go. My school isn’t on the list but I know people currently working at all three from my school and it’s on the east coast.
It probably won’t matter too much which school you go to for jobs. All the job interviews are basically tests. All they care about i if you can pass their tests. Ex. Google’s software engineering interview is coding questions on the spot with a google engineer. They don’t ask you any personal questions.
If you are international, then searching for sponsorship will be extremely difficult.
They are all good schools. One factor to consider is whether you will be admitted directly into the Computer Science major, or whether you’ll have to compete against other students for admission after freshman year. The schools that admit you into the CS major for freshman year have an advantage, as you can be sure of not being shut out of your desired major.
