I was wondering if anybody knew any target schools that I should apply to for the film scoring connections? I will still study composition in school, but I wanted to know if I should target any schools that have those connections, just for me to be able to get in touch with the industry early on, also to practice early on for my career.
USC has a well-regarded film scoring masters program but likes its undergrads to get a foundation first. It’s location is obviously ideal. There are also many schools where you can take classes in film scoring and a few where you can focus on it as an undergrad. You can also intern as a way to gain skills, experience and connections during the summer, regardless of where you go.
Just want to add that composition is a long road, and you want to take one step at a time. I can’t think off hand of any composers who have a career in the field, right out of undergrad, so try to think long term.
USC and NYU and probably Berklee will be your best schools. One of my kid’s best friends is off to NYU this year for film scoring and he’s an absolutely brilliant musician.
NYU is expensive and doesn’t have a great reputation for aid. USC too. Berklee is expensive too, though it does give merit scholarships to some.
I wonder if you have considered your state university? SUNY Purchase has a great Conservatory as well as a film school, and is affordable. Ithaca, Lawrence, Oberlin or Bard might be possibilities for BM and some courses on film scoring…
Or BA programs with good financial aid.
