Good things about Rice..

soo... people... start praising. I got into UT Plan II Honors and Northwestern... and I'm having a hard time deciding. My parents are really gung ho about Rice and REALLY want me to go there.. though i personally prefer NU. then again, the most I hear about Rice isn't all that great. so.. what's great about it? :)

Well, I'm in Plan II Honors and I'm applying for transfer admission to Rice. I don't know anything about Northwestern. The main reason I'm applying is because I like Rice's campus/community better than UT's.

i think it really depends on what you are studying. certain schools have better departments in certain areas.

^ yeah but.. i mean aside from that. i just mean like.. student life... location.. diversity.. etc. etc. i know for a fact that northwestern is known for its strong journalism program/liberal arts program.. and that's where im heading... but my parents are adamant on sending me to rice.. so i just needed some words of praise to make myself feel better i guess =/

NW is also known for being rather UG unfriendly...

No frats and sororities. No freezing cold winds blowing off the lake. Spicy hot ethnic food, warm and welcoming community, funky and friendly people, great opps and research and internships, flexible and available professors, O-week, lots of traditions and fun and games, beautiful campus, beautiful surrounding area, light rail, lots of intermural and club sports, shorts in december....

anxiousmom, its those kinda responses that make u want to goto rice all the more... considering it for fall tho :0

Rice has much less pre-professionalism.

hey - im going to rice architecture next year, and i said a ton about it in the arch. thread check it out http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=2077985#post2077985

Rice is amazing. You will bond with people in your residential college. You will have tons of performances to attend- opera, orchestra, choir..... You will walk or run around the outer loop (3 mile path around campus where everyone exercises).....you will have lots of choices of parties every weekend (this past weekend was BeerBike which is THE fun social event of the season)....you will be around kids from all areas of the country.....you will be on a beautiful campus surrounded by a nice neighborhood.

i got int Northwestern and Rice last year....both great schools

i really didn't consider Rice b/c of the texas thing...but i heard greatttt things about it

One thing quite much sure is that Rice is more Science/Math oriented and Northwestern is more Sociology/Humanities oriented. So, it would be question of what area will you major in.

meh rice is pretty wicked in their school of social studies too - GO ECONOMICS MAJORS!

DD is now in the social sciences area.. (has changed majors several times). I think Rice is very balanced in its areas. (except architecture - which is smaller)

princeton review gives Rice 99 in fin aid, 99 in quality of life, and something in the high 90s for academics (Northwestern is for some reason in high 70s).

Obviously no one source can be taken as fact, but when compared to its peer institutions Rice is at least higher rated by its own students.
