Gorge Deaths

about how many people fall into the gorge each year? When i visited in april one kid left to a party at 3AM and never came back, they later found his body at the bottom of the gorge. So i was wondering because there isn't really any protection from falling down there if you're drunk or something

about 30 a year

it's not exactly a common thing. I've heard of stories but can only recall the one incident last year. If you're drunk, stupid, lost, and figure cutting through the woods will be a good idea, then there is a risk associated with going over.

I recall two since I've been here. The April incident last year and the drunk guy from my freshman year who actually climbed over the fence and then fell to his death.

A lot of things can be dangerous when you're drunk and insensible.

Ameechee, you should be banned from this forum. Obviously you are joking, because this sad occurance is extremely rare, but you're not funny at all. In fact, you're humor regarding a few families unfortunate tragedies is sick.

there was 1 last year, 0 last semester, and norcal guy is a graduate now, right? Either way, they're rather uncommon; really nothing you should worry about. Freshman year, a problem would likely only arise if you were walking home to north campus alone AND belligerantly drunk (seriously beyond common sense), but that should never happen if you have decent friends. As long as you look at the gorge once in a while when you are sober, which you inevidably will as you walk to and from class, you will gain a respect for it that should give you the common sense to know not to tempt fate by going dangerously close to it if you are drunk.

Of note, I know last years wasn't, and it doesn't sound like norcal's, either, was a suicide.

you mean a week

yes, my bad. 30 a week

I'm only a junior so there has been a gorge death each of my first two years. But you are correct that they weren't suicides.

omg, talk about a stupid way to die.... don't they have some sort of railing or sth?

SAT_hater:
there isn't really a railing, it's hard to explain because the gorge is such a huge part of the campus that it would be really ugly/difficult to gate it off. it's kind of hard to fall in especially near cascadilla and college town because theres a long hill before the actual water. but by the bridges its easy to fall/jump in if you're being stupid and actually climb over.

Let's put it this way: you probably have a better chance of dying while DUI than jumping off the gorge, so I don't think it's anything to worry about. Generally drinking increases the chances of dying by a lot.

I hope u guys do realise that 90% of all G_deaths are not Cornellians...they're just some freaky motorists who think they are Alan Prost rteincarnated...VERY few Cornellians fall into the Pits of Doom

I'm not worried at all. I was just wondering for the sake of wondering
