Got in, but can't afford

I was accepted to Duke, and it's definately my top choice but I don't think I can afford it. I didn't receive any merit scholarships and though I haven't received my official financial aid report yet, I'm not expecting to get anything. Are there any ways I can attend Duke without incurring an incredible amount of debt? I'm from Caifornia, so if I can't go to Duke it'll most likely be in-state tution at Berkeley or UCLA for me.

Call the financial aid office. You might be surprised. They’re fairly understanding; I’m upper-middle class, and I receive a substantial amount of aid. Anyway it’s a shame that the FAFSA doesn’t take into account cost of living in places like California. You could always join the military, too. ROTC will pay everything, but you will be required to serve after graduating.

I would wait until you get your financial aid package though before calling and asking for a reevaluation.

UCLA and Berkeley are great universities.

Thanks for the help everyone, I’ll keep it in mind. And if it doesn’t work out, you’re right, UC Berkeley and UCLA are great universities.
