Got into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke: ASK ME ANYTHING!

Oh
Do you know any international students that i can talk to ?
Thanks for answering

Hi Ethan! I am applying to transfer to Cornell Fall 2020 for my junior and senior year. I am a female honors student at state school in the south. My GPA isn’t perfect, but my test scores, community involvement, achievements, etc. are competitive. Do you think it is a good idea for me to capitalize on the fact that I am from the south (Atlanta) in my essays to increase my chances of admission (only 7.5% of Cornell transfers are from the southeast)? I can’t decide if that would help or hurt my application.

Thanks for your help!

Wow, congratulations! I’m also interested in studying public policy when I apply, so I was wondering if you had any tips on how to find related extracurriculars or applying to internships? Thank you!

So since the schools you applied to none are known for either CS or Public Policy especially but of course all amazing schools. Which one will let you create your own major per se and let you intersect them both? Many schools support this. That to me might be the best school for you.

Hi, I’m a high school senior and recently got accepted into University of Southern California (USC) and University of California: Irvine (UCI) as a Biology major. I was wondering if you know any pros and cons for both of these schools in terms of pre-med. I know USC is quite expensive but is it worth it to get into medical school? Any advice helps!

@planetmoonbyul No worries at all planetmoon, I’m happy to help share my story. I’ve heard that colleges evaluate the number of AP or IB courses you take in the context of your high school. For me personally, I gravitated more towards the social science AP courses because I found the content to jive best with my learning style. I think that is partly why I was able to fit in so many. Even with that said though, I would concentrate on depth versus breadth when it comes to course selection. I think the best advice is to follow your interests and take the most challenging classes you feel comfortable with. Good luck and thanks for your question!

@CubbieBlue16 Thanks for your question Cubbie!

(1) I have a brother who goes to my city’s University of Colorado campus. This is the only legacy status I have at the schools I applied to.

(2) My high school typically sends students to ivy league colleges maybe once every 2-5 years. All around though, they have been incredibly supportive as far as college preparation goes, and I’m really thankful for that.

(3) I did not use any college consulting services.

Have a good day!

@caz0743 This is a great question, thanks caz0743. I’ve only heard good things about CMU’s computer science program. For me personally, the reason I chose not to apply was because I know the School of Computer Science has a very low acceptance rate. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be a competitive applicant for that reason. I also ran out of time with the supplements. But with that said, I would encourage any other students to apply there who have an interest in CS.

Have a nice day!

@Marall You’re welcome Marall, thanks for your question. I believe there’s a subreddit focused around applying to US colleges as an international student. I’m not sure what it’s called, but that could be a helpful resource.

Have a good day!

@evansren Oh that’s awesome, I don’t know too much about the transfer process, but I think highlighting geographic diversity can be a strong selling point. I’m from Colorado and used my essays as a platform to talk a little bit about why nature is important to me. Good luck, I hope everything goes well!

@aela00 Sure thing, thanks for your question aela00! Most of my internships were focused around computer science, so I may not be able to offer much feedback on the public policy department. However, almost all my volunteer work had to do with politics. To get started, I would definitely look into your county and city volunteer boards. I’ve really enjoyed learning more about the functions of local government, and it’s helped open my eyes to future career paths. There’s also quite a few grassroots political organizations that take in high school volunteers for campaign, voter registration, or canvassing work. I’d recommend signing up for those if you’re interested.

Have a nice day!

@eldonjacob177 Hey Eldon, thanks for your comment. I am currently in the process of deciding on which college to attend, and haven’t committed anywhere yet. I definitely hear your concern about the class differences though. That’s something my Brown interviewer mentioned was a struggle for him when he was a student there. I know a lot of campuses have student groups to promote inclusivity though, which is a really valuable resource.

Have a good day!

Hey @ethancollege2020
I’ve been waitlisted from Harvard as someone who applied as an engineer with an interest in business. I think this is somewhat similar to you. Considering their liberal arts focus, how should I go about for the waitlist letter? What do you think I should focus more on? My app was more focused on tech.

Also, I’m trying to decide between Duke and GTech. Any ideas?

Hi Ethan, congratulations to your college acceptance! Can you share with us about how you combine your engineering interest and public policy interest into one theme in your college application ?

Congratulations!! Yale is my dream school and it is very exciting that you got in! I have two big passions but a bunch of a volunteering thing (that I am passionate about)/teaching side gigs. Does it matter to have those extra things, or should I hone in on my two passions. Also should the essays explain the person I am or the stuff that I enjoy

Wow Ethan. Everything you have done is impressive and reading your answers has been very interesting. I also want to pursue CS and apply for the schools you have as well. However, I definitely would not have as good as an application as you. My extracurriculars are also more athletic based than based towards programming, but I have been doing programming since 6th grade but haven’t taken it as seriously until the past 2 years. Well I have done these 2 competitions but I haven’t taken away a major award for it. I was going to enter into more hackathons and try getting my first internship this summer but our current situation has led to it all being cancelled.

Do you think you can offer some insight or advice on what to do to improve that aspect of my college applications?

First of all, congratulations!

I currently go to a large public school (over 1,000 in my class). Do you have any advice as to when to start thinking about and preparing for college applications? Also, when do you think is an optimal time to start applying for internships?

Thank you for your time and good luck!

Hi, my son is interested in studying business (accounting/finance) as an undergrad. He was accepted to Bentley, Umass Amherst, Purdue, Penn State Harrisburg, and Indiana University (direct admit to Kelley). He was waitlisted at Babson and University of Richmond. He was also accepted to University of Maryland, but not a direct admit to the business school.

He is very torn about choosing a school and wonders if he should chance waiting for the waitlist schools. Could you provide some guidance? Assume cost is not a factor. Thanks!

Can you get into an ivy league with 2 Bs? What about 3? (They are all in AP/Honors classes)

@slin02 not Ethan but DO NOT depend on waitlist schools. Start researching the acceptances and start getting excited about going to one of them. I recommend you research changing deposit deadlines due to covid but make sure to send a deposit to one school.
