I know AU is a dry campus, but does anyone know what the party scene is like? I’m choosing between 5 schools right now and I obviously won’t base my decision on the parties, but I think it is something that I have to factor in.
Thanks!

The “dry” campus has certainly not stopped my D from finding parties. Mostly off campus in nearby apartments. But there is drinking going on in the dorm rooms as well. As long as you don’t cause problems, I don’t think the RA does anything. Don’t know anything about the drug scene, however.

I agree with megpmom. There is no shortage of a party scene here since you can go to other school’s parties and there are always people heading out to parties on Tuesday and Friday nights (Tuesday because lots of people don’t take block classes on Wednesdays or have like 1 class on Wednesday).

Also, drinking in the dorms is less encouraged because it really depends on how strict your RA is. Continuous violations can land you on probation and even get you kicked out of housing. And just like any other college there is a drug scene here… if you’re looking for it obviously.

I may be ignorant on this point, but since they made the drinking age 21 many years ago, aren’t all campuses technically “dry”? I don’t know how you could have a bar on campus, or sell alcohol, (like most schools did when I was in college) and not violate the law.

@fnpmom - Around 10 years ago, AU’s Tavern was a bar for students before AU technically became a “dry” campus. Some students, by the time they are seniors, are 21 or 22 at other colleges and therefore can legally drink (for example Catholic University allows drinking on campus, it’s not a dry campus).

Thanks for the info! I didn’t realize any schools had bars on campus anymore. In the 70s
they all did but I thought that had changed.

I was at UVM a couple weeks ago and they have beer on tap in the dinning hall

AU’s scene is mostly parties thrown by the fraternities off-campus. There are parties most weekends (dying down around midterm and finals times, but surging with avengeance right after).

Yes, the campus is dry (and yes, “The Tavern” once served alcohol). Therefore, while there is a minority junior/senior population on campus, and even though they are 21+, they too cannot drink on campus. Floor drinking occurs, and while there are strict RAs, many have a policy of “as long as you’re not being a jerk, I won’t bust you.”

DC / AU have a “your body is not a container” policy. Therefore drinking will get you in trouble. Being drunk won’t. (Directly, anyway. Many a time it’s what you do WHILE drunk that gets you in trouble.)
