Looking for opinions/experience with Gould Academy. We are considering sending our child who is a skier but also an excellent student. Academics are our priority but also a happy, all around high school experience.

It seems to be an invisable school…I looked it up for reviews or comments or anything, but there really isn’t anything. I read about it a boarding school guide and was quite interested, but there doesn’t seem to be much about it, at least on the internet, except a couple articles about skiing, and that they were in the past trying to recruit male lacrossse players for their team. I can try to ask around, but right now I would suggest looking into Holderness, where the sister of a good friend of mine has recently decided to go due to its skiing oppurtunities. Also, there is another very good skiing school, in Vermont, called the Green Mountain Valley School, but I don’t know about its academics, which I can guarantee are quite good at Holderness. Also, at GMVS, I have read that there is very little diversity - 99% white and 1% asian/pacific islander. For me, this is important, but it may be irrevelant to you. Anyway, to get back to original question, I would definetly suggest spending a day there to get to know the school, maybe even an overnight experience for your child if it can be arranged. It some ways, it is good that there is so little online about Gould - now you can build your own opinions without any influence from others.

Know of a wonderful young man from my son’s school who is excited about going to Gould next fall. He is smart but not Einstein, a great athlete but not a total jock. Extremely polite, well dressed and well mannered. Someone I would be proud to have part of my child’s bs community.

Sorry that is all I have on Gould :)

I know an alum well. It was great place for him. He went on to do very well acedemically both in undergrad and grad school - better I am sure than the “average” HADES grad. I am not saying Gould is a HADES school because it is not. However, students can get a great education there.

I am told the skiing is top notch and the school made an effort to develop the ski program over the last 10 to 15 years. I am also told the top racers are often top students. Holderness is a competitor. Les Otten of American Ski Company fame sent his kids there and was a leader to help the school build its ski program. I would check it out and decide

It seems like a great place to school. I know that the Gould Academy alpine team had their own lodge at the base of the hill! It was equipped with a huge projector to review video on. It seemed to have the level of skiing as a ski academy would, but with better academics. I haven’t seen the campus in person, but it’s very close to Sunday River. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like Holderness and Gould are on par with eachother. Feel free to PM me for any questions you may have.

My DD was accepted to Gould and Holderness. We are looking at academics first, skiing second (she’s a freestyler), as well. We are revisiting both and two others of interest that have ski programs, but aren’t on the level of Gould and Holderness. PM if you have any questions.
