I am a freshmen and I got 1.7 GPA for the first semester. I got C, C, -C, and a D. The sad thing is that I feel thankful that at least I didn't fail anything. I was an all A student and got into a prestigious college but now what I am more worried about than my low GPA is that my expectations about myself are getting lower and lower...
Anyway, I screwed up badly. It was me not working hard enough + the worst professor on ratemyprofessor.com(for all my classes. My schedule was messed up) + wrong classes.
Do I have a future? Should I retake everything in summer? My school averages the grades but I think the old grades still appear on the transcript. Now that I failed at school, what are my options for not failing life??? Help!

First of all, getting bad grades your first semester doesn’t mean you’ve “failed at school”. You have 7 more semesters to go. You said yourself that you didn’t work hard enough, so that’s what needs to change more than anything if you want to bring your GPA up.

Apply that to every challenge in life and you will be fine.

I got a 1.8 GPA my first semester… so I know how you feel. One of the things I’m doing next semester is starting my classes later on in the day (1-2 p.m.) instead of 10 a.m. and having no classes on Fridays, since I ended up missing important classes because I couldn’t be assed to wake up that early or after partying Thurs night… I’m also following ratemyprofessor now and reviews for all my teachers are good, and I’m taking more Gen Eds this semester that will hopefully give me a little boost. Plus I’m going to spend way more time studying than wasting time on facebook, hopefully.

College may not be for everyone. Some people are just destined to work at McDonalds. Not everyone can be at the cutting edge of business and science. Society needs janitors too.

yeah but just because someone got a 1.7 their first semester of college doesnt mean they have to be a janitor and arent cut out for college

does your college allow retakes? I got a D-, D+ and an F in some college classes once upon a time. I was able to replace those grades in my GPA. It goes like this in my school: if you retake the class, the actual F doesn’t disappear from your transcript, but the better grade will replace the older grade in terms of GPA. So if you got a D (worth 1 point), and then you got an A (worth 4 points) in the retake, the 4 replaces the 1 in your transcript. Don’t know if your system works like that. Maybe if you want to, you can retake the more important class(es).

Work harder. Now you have to get above a 3.7 to at least get a 3.2 which is great. Trust me you can do it. Set goals and push to achieve them. If you did it in HS, why stop now?

Too many people come out of HS totally unprepared for college. I was one of them. HS is so easy that any idiot can coast through, so they don’t develop the skills and the MINDSET necessary to excel in college. Take this as your wake up call, NOT something to despair over. It’s in the past and can’t be changed. What can be changed is your attitude, your study skills, etc.

Also remember that you have 3 maybe 4 semesters to get it up, don’t let people fool you into thinking you have more time. You need to get those internships sophomore and junior year.
