GPA and GRE for top EE or CSE graduate school

Hi. I am a senior undergraduate student in SUNY at Buffalo, and my major is Electrical Engineering. My current GPA is 3.83 and my GRE score is Q-720, V-710, writing-3.0. I am planning to apply some top graduate school, and I have checked their websites. For EE or CSE major, it seems like most accepted student have quantitative score 760 or higher. Will my quantitative and writing score be a problem? Thank you very much for your advice.

General consensus is that research experience is the most important factor in PhD admissions. If you’re applying for masters, that may be different.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am applying master program. Do you think I should take the GRE again?

That depends, do you think you can get a better score? What can you differently a second time around? The GRE is not like a slot machine where you get a different result every time, most people see a relatively consistent score unless they significantly change their preparation.

Your GPA and verbal score are great, but the quant is low and the writing worrying. I think your quant is probably okay but it will be a very slight drag on your application, and may take you of consideration for some fellowships (if you are otherwise eligible, which as a masters student is unlikely).

The writing is more problematic, especially if you are a native English speaker - the dividing line seems to be around a score of 4, since the test does not measure accurately above that and below that level suggests major deficiencies in your essays. If you an international student with a good TOEFL score they may let this pass, but for a domestic student this may be more alarming than the quant score, and suggests that you may have trouble writing papers.

cosmicfish,
Thank you very much for your advice. I am an international student, but I have earned my B.S. degree in U.S. I think I am not going to take the GRE again. I will try my best to make the rest of my application stronger.

Anyway, Does anyone know someone who didn’t do well on GRE, but has been accepted to top engineering graduate schools?
