GPA at MIT

That's true about internships. What do you plan to major in and what eventual career do you plan to have?

At least in the sciences, a B-average is not hard. Most of my friends report GPA's usually around or in excess of 4.5 (=3.5 on a 4.0 scale). I don't know much about engineering, though I suspect a B-average wouldn't be too hard there either.

I was originally thinking about Management, but I wanted to make myself more competitive so I was thinking course 2A with a concentration in product development. I want to working in product development for consumer electronics.

The only thing is I think course 2A might be hard to maintain a good GPA, seeing as its mechanical engineering. But the above posts are giving me a little more confidence

There is a good support system for MechE according to my MechE assistant advisor. 2A gives enough flexibility that you shouldn't need to worry about GPA too much. When I came here I was thinking "Man, this is MIT, I'm going to get terrible grades" and this turned out not to be the case. Granted, I'm a frosh, but I'm told that if you're rational about it you'll get good grades througout.

I dont know, i dont really pay attention to class distribution of letter grades. I have some A's some B's in my physics and engineering classes. I don't think I would be knocking anyone out with my intellectual powers. But maybe you think B's are bad grades.

umm..mit students..is there such a thing where you can mark a certain class and drop it up to the final or even after the final, like one class per each semester...and are these hidden grades (that could potentially show up if medical schools required them, or are they completely out?)

if you are a sophomore you can. it's called sophomore standing, you get your final grade and decide if you want to keep it or drop it. no, dropped classes don't show up on ANY external transcripts, and their grades don't show up on any internal transcripts.

(sophomore exploratory - I'm taking 6.001 on it :))

What I'm looking forward, though, is junior/senior PDF...

and by sophomore standing I mean, "I'm really freaking tired".

yeah. i'm taking 18.703 on exploratory. exploratory exploratory exploratory.

You can also always drop a class up to drop date, which is really late (about 2-3 weeks before finals).

No I think B's are good grades, especially at MIT. I just wanted to know the feasibility of getting a 3.0 (out of 4.0) in the engineering/math/science classes.

I once saw that the median GPA at MIT is a 4.2, so more than half the school has above a 4.0.
