If I transferred from a community college to a UC, how is my GPA calculated when I apply for grad school? I had a rough first year at UC and my GPA is now nowhere near acceptable for grad school at the moment. However, combined with my CC grades, I think I still might have a decent chance as long as I do better this coming year (which I completely plan on doing).

The schools that I am looking at require a minimum 2.5 GPA for their applicants. Would this mean that my CC+UC needs be a 2.5+ or that my UC gpa needs to be 2.5+?

If your school specifies cumulative GPA, that is the GPA of your entire college career.

Some programs want the GPA for your junior and senior years only. Again, those programs should specify that in their application information.

If your junior year grades are that bad, though, you may want to consider taking a gap year. Otherwise, with graduate application deadlines often in mid-fall, those grades might be the only ones the graduate admissions committee sees.

@polarscribe: thanks! i will be taking a gap year so that this past year’s grades aren’t all they see. plus, i won’t be done with my undergraduate degree until the end of next fall anyway :/
