GPA CRISIS. Experienced CCers please help!

Wait, I’ve only see a a few schools, what’s the whole list? Are you ranked by your current school? What Asian country are you from? What are your scores? Just how bad were your Asian grades?

1) I applied REA to Stanford, just to take a shot at it. got rejected.
I’m applying to Tufts, Vassar, UMich, Brown, Columbia, MIT, Williams, Amherst and Dartmouth.
I know the last 6 schools are reaches. But i’d never know if i don’t apply:P

2) My school doesn’t officially rank, but right now i’m in the top 3%.

3) Republic of Korea. that’s the non-communist one.

4) scores; as I said, SAT 2190 for October, and still waiting for the December score. 118 out of 120 for the iBT TOEFL. Full International Baccalaureate candidate, but the IB examination scores won’t be out til July (examinations are in May)

5) The grades from my old school that count for these applications make up three semesters, and of those three, I got perfect scores in English (100), good scores in Korean and Humanities (90-85), mediocre scores in subjects like Home Economics (80ish) and flunked a semester of General Science and two semesters of Advanced Mathematics. I made up for those 3 flunked credits via a legit online course program and got 89% for two credits of Pre-Calculus and 88% for a Chemistry credit. I currently take IB Physics Higher Level and IB Math Standard Level. 720 on the SAT I Math section. not even average for an Asian, I know:P (and to explain my MIT choice… I love their arts department and one of my dreams is to meet Noam Chomsky. yes laugh at my naivety…)

I’m not kidding myself by applying to these reach schools. I know I’m not stupid, I didn’t flunk because I didn’t understand science or math. Anyway I’ve tried hard to make up for those grades and have really committed to my current school and a bunch of ECs. (I also play tennis in varsity) Hoping my journalism/lit concentration will make up for this…

Instead of asking more questions, can you tell me if you have any further advice? Now that you’ve known in detail what my situation is.

I would not apply for aid at any if these schools if you can afford them. You will be competing with the pool from Korea filled with kids with higher stats.

I would add 3 less competitive schools. Frankly I think you’re wasting your time at the ivies and MIT.

okay. 10char

what i don’t get is, why would my GC tell me I actually have a chance at those Ivies? just getting my hopes up. i don’t know how to explain this to my parents, they can’t read too much english… i’m going to have to tell them they’ll be wasting their money paying the application fees… ■■■

bump10char

Your GC probably genuinely doesn’t know.

Not applying for FA will help. Having a low GPA and being from Korea will hurt a lot. I don’t want to make you feel bad, but seriously, it is very likely you will be rejected from all of those schools. The only one that doesn’t look hopeless to me is UMich because it’s a state school and internationals are a solid source of income for state schools in the US, but it’s also pretty selective so I don’t know.

Why don’t you apply to some slightly less well-known schools, like Dickinson, URochester, Grinnell, Bucknell, Davidson, BU? (These are all schools that have, according to my school’s Naviance, accepted international B/B+ students with SAT scores in the 2100-2200 range before.) Cast a wider net, so to speak.

@Ghostt
those “bad” grades are like C+/B average, now that i’ve made up for the lost credits in math and science. my grades from second semester of sophomore year and both semesters of my junior year are cumulatively about A/A+. I heard UMich doesn’t look at freshman grades anyway… and I have legacy for UMich, I hope that helps me:P

Thanks for the other suggestions, though
