GPA-dependent scholarship renewals

Ah, spring of freshman year of college....when new questions about this whole scholarship world arise!! D has a combination of merit and competitively-awarded scholarships at her school. She is beginning to get the fin aid award emails, and so far, just one of them has shown up. The others state that they are GPA-dependent. Are those usually added to a student's package after final grades for the year are posted?

Yes. Kids can lose those scholarships if they don’t meet the mark. And a number of them do each year.

It probably varies by school. My daughter’s scholarships were always the first thing to appear on her financial aid page but were accompanied by a blurb about being dependent on meeting GPA etc requirements.

Check, check, check. I got sick one semester and did very poorly, but I ended up finishing the school year out strong and more than met my GPA requirement. In the spring, I got a financial aid award from my school with my substantial scholarship (that covered everything) replaced with a huge loan. I called the financial aid office and they had made a mistake - they thought that my fall semester GPA for that year, which was below the stated requirements, was my CUMULATIVE GPA. And so they took away my scholarship without so much of a phone call, a letter, or an email telling me that I was even on probation much less losing it.

So call the school and check.

Not always. Son has a friend who did not meet the GPA requirement to keep scholarship or stay in the honors program. A call from his parents to the higher ups did the trick. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.
