GPA Downward Trend

So right now I'm a Junior but my GPA trend is really bad. It was decent Freshman year, went up for Sophomore year but now its ending of first semester Junior year and my grades have gone down

Freshman Year
Honors Geomotry A/A
Honors US B/B
Honors French 3 B/B
Honors English 9 B/A
Gym A/A
Ceramics 1 B/B
Honors Biology B/B

Sophomore Year
Honors Chemistry A/A
Honors English 10 A/A
Honors French 4 B/A
Honors Physics B/B
Honors Algebra 2 A/A
AP NSL A/A
Ceramics 2 A
Honors Health A
End of Freshman and Sophomore: 3.5 UW, 4.22 W

Junior Year 1st semester projected grades
Honors Precal A/
IB History C/
IB English B/
IB French 5 B/
DP AP Chem A-B/ (Counts for 2 in the GPA)
IB Film C-B DROPPED after 1st semester
AP Econ- Second Semester

Senior Year Classes
AP Physics
IB English
IB History
AP BC Calc
IB French 6
AP Psych
AP Statistics

How bad is this? How will this hurt my chances?

You need to turn it around quickly. It’s not looking good depending on which schools you apply to.

Yeah, I’m hoping second semester is better. Hopefully, it will stay above a 3.0 and be back up to a 3.5 by the end of the year. The only thing thats saving me in the slightest is the rigorous schedule I have

SpaceDuck is right OP. you also might want to tone down your senior year some so your GPA doesn’t drop again. don’t take more than you can chew. I may be wrong, but it looks like that’s what made your GPA drop.

I’m in the same position.
The advice here I was planning on following anyways. Well, not on purpose, but it just so happened I only have five classes to take next year. I think taking less classes will help :)

IK it’s not an excuse but some of the problems were:
IB History: It’s the hardest class offered at my school and history is my weakest subject so I was unsure how to handle it
IB English: My teacher sucks, doesn’t give/grade assignments and that makes me not want to work hard
IB Film: I hate the class, we’ve had 2 projects and both my groups have been uncooperative. I’m dropping it which IK might look bad but I can’t take this class for another 1.5 years

I can’t drop my IB classes because they’re 2 year classes, math is my strongest subject so I’m taking AP BC Calc, AP Physics is the only Science for me to take except AP/IB Bio (I HATE Bio), on-level sciences or Environmental which is an annoying class I have no interest in. And although AP Stat and AP Psych are “extra,” they’re known as 2 really easy AP’s at my school and that’s why I’m taking them as my last 2 classes.

Any other opinions?

Take easier classes.

Take easier classes. The IB classes already show you as ‘challenging’ yourself, and how you do junior and senior is is extremely important.

For History, try other ways to make studying more interesting, and for English, do some kind of reward system for yourself to keep yourself motivated.

Physics and Calc, I think, go hand-in-hand. It’s not really so at my school, though. Which Physics - B or C?

Can you find a tutor for the things you’re struggling with?

then I would suggest dropping physics (you don’t need to take a science class senior year) or dropping stats and psych

I would be taking Physics C. I think next semester it’ll get better because: I have an amazing English teacher who I love, I dropped film and I’m getting better at history. I think I’ll see how next semester goes before I make any final class decisions

Really you should not be taking all those hard classes next year if you can barely handle your current schedule?
What colleges are you looking at?

If I pull out an A in AP Chem, would it be so bad if I get a C in film? I know it’s an IB class and I know it’s going to look bad that I’m dropping it, but I just can’t stay in the class and I’m worried about how the C is going to look

You still have not told us what colleges you are looking at (different colleges will view these grades/decisions differently). I don’t understand how you can get a C in a film class, but really you should work to bring the grade up instead of dropping. Also what is your intended major?

Intended Major: Chemistry/Drama
Colleges: Not really in my range but- NYU, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon, Tulane, Northwestern, Brandeis, UMD (home state)

I’m not dropping it because of a C. I just HATE the class. It’s a 2 year course and I can’t take it for another year and a half. I dread it everyday, I don’t find anything we learn interesting etc. It’s a really hard class and I have major issues with it. It also takes A LOT of time and work (to make the films etc.) and I feel my time would be better focused on History or Chemistry which I enjoy.

the thing is OP, even though you had some reasons as to why you’re not doing so well this year, there’s a reason that they aren’t considered excuses. it’s not just because people are mean and if something bad just happens then, oh well, you’re loss. it’s because that’s life, and you should be prepared for some things to go wrong. it happens to everyone. you have to consider next year’s schedule, taking into account that SOMETHING will not go as you expected. it’s the sciencetific error of life. you can’t just make up a schedule thinking that you’ll like all the classes and all the teachers will be great, so you should definitely get an A.

that being said, this is your decision. seeing how the next semester goes before making any final decisions is probably a good idea. I’m just saying, don’t take hard classes, because you feel obliged too. take the courseload you’re most comfortable with. I know that at this time last year, I didn’t listen to that advice, because I thought it sounded lazy. don’t be me OP.
