GPA for Med School

Thanks for the link bluedevilmike. MIT premed stats look pretty similar to Duke for 2006. If anybody has links to premed stats for other top schools, I'd love to see them.

Well, it's a shame that MIT doesn't publish better data. Rounding to a tenth of a point is very imprecise -- do they mean a 3.55 or a 3.64? What's the mean science GPA, the more important number?

And MIT's percentage has in the past been reported in the 70% range, compared to Duke's 85-90%. Are they applying less intelligently? Is Duke doing some screening? (I can promise you they're not.)

MIT has an overall acceptance rate of 72% with seniors and alums equally successful. Duke has an overall acceptance rate of 74.5% with seniors faring much better than alums.

I have no explanation for the dichotomy considering they are both top tier schools. It neither makes sense that MIT seniors are less qualified than Duke or that Duke alums are less qualified than MIT.

At any rate, they are both well above the 47% national average for acceptance (versus schools that by and large screen their applicants).

I read the 75% for Duke and thought, "That can't be right." It turns out it is. My fault for not reading the report carefully. Over the past five years, the percentage has gone: 83%, 84%, 79%, 80%, 75%. Hopefully this does not reflect a trend.
