It seems like the major difference between the people accepted versus those rejected was GPA. I have seen a lot of people here who got rejected with higher SATs than me (I got in with a 2130), but lower GPAs. Do you think UCLA weighed GPA higher than SATs this year? I think that makes sense because you GPA is more of an indication of how hard you have worked and how well you can handle the workload, which is really important at a big school like UCLA where you don't have everyone holding your hand. What do you guys think?

I think they weighed the ESSAYS heavily. Or that's how I think I got in.

I agree. I know 4 people who got in with 1900 SATs, I think it must be GPA or... ECs??

i dunno. i think its more heavily on SAT. My total GPA was a 4.500, i didnt get in.. my sat's were not too sweet.

Agree completely. Unless you bombed the SATs, they generally did not seem to matter much at all.

I've presented a basic thesis here:

i got into ucla

sat: 2160

gpa: 4.0 uW -- yeah baby!

Wasn't UC GPA always considered more of a factor than SATs in UCLA admissions?

Not by this much. It seemed like people of a certain GPA got in whether the SAT was 2300 or 1900. Ditto for those of another certain range of GPA who were rejected despite the said SAT range.

I got rejected with above average everything, except for GPA.

i would have to agree
i believe the key for this year's admission were gpa and personal statements
i got in with a 1990 sat but my essays were killer

i got in with a 3.86 UC gpa so it must not be all gpa

i think i am a good miracle too.. 4.0 W GPA, 1860 SAT (580V, 700M, 580W), 680 chem, 630 math II... i am well rounded, but not stellar... i think i had good personal statements.

jimmy what major did u get in for? b/c i got 4.0w too

I agree with Jimmy, so many people had better sat scores than me (1900, 730, 620) yet i got in
my unweuighted gpa was 3.9 and weighteed was 4.2 so that is average, but i think my essay and ecs did the job, my 600 word essay kicked ass and i think being well rounded helps a ton:
-Founder and Creator of :CollegeNSite Club
-2 years of editor of newspaper
-3 yrs volleyball (captain and 2 yrs varisty) and club vball
-student governemnt, treasurer of sn class
-tutoring
all that stuff saved me i think cuz it was huge, i tried to dip my feet into every aspect of my school

Do the number of AP's count as a factor as well as GPA?

the UC's have always emphasized GPA over SAT. the reason why you guys had to take the new SAT was because the UC's were about to NOT use the (old) SAT in their admissions decisions anymore. the new SAT was created to appease the UC's (collegeboard's biggest customer).

if you look at the 25%-75% brackets, the UC's pretty much always have lower SAT ranges than their similarly-ranked counterparts.

My GPA was better (4.35 UC weighted) than my SAT's (1990) and I had good EC's and essays, but I got rejected so I'm not sure if that theory can apply to all. Maybe you're right for most people, but in my case it doesn't fit.

I agree completely.
My SATs were terrible but i had a really good GPA, *in awesome (in my opinion) personal statements (3 short answers), and I did stuff other than *in study all day.

I think they pick names out of a hat and offer admission to them. How else could you explain my friend with an 1800 SAT/ 4.0 GPA getting rejected while a number of people I know with around 1700 SAT/ 3.5 GPA getting in.

-- the explanation would be in the pesonal statement which you probably didn't read. there can also be reasons like personal adversities, etc.
