Hey everyone,

I qualified as a National Merit Semifinalist but I only have a 3.60 unweighted GPA (4.05 weighted). I was wondering if this will prevent me from advancing to Finalist standing. My grades will be much better this year, if that means anything.

So, what GPA do Semifinalists need to become Finalists, provided that there are no problems with anything else on the application?

Thanks,

My unweighted and weighted are both pretty close to yours. I think people on here have said that as long as you don’t have any C’s for semester grades, you’re good. And since your high school was supposed to send your transcript last week, I don’t think NM will see any of your senior year grades (a shame, since I have like a 101 in AP calc right now).

your senior year grades won’t matter since your school has already provided your transcript and that likely only had your grades from 9 - 11. NMCorp doesn’t go back and ask for a later transcript.

That said, it sounds like your grades are fine. Problems occur when there are any D’s or too many C’s for semester grades. One C is ok for a semester grade (maybe 2). D’s are a problem.

NMCorp is not looking for tiny reasons to keep kids from becoming NMFs. 16000 NMSF…15000 NMF

Those who don’t make NMF have poor GPAs/poor grades (too many Cs for semester grades), sub 1960 SATs (or about), discipline problems at school, wrote an obnoxiously rude essay, didn’t do the paperwork, etc.

(transcripts usually do not show quarter grades…usually only semester grades or “year end” grades.)

People need to chillax!!! If you don’t have those problems, you’re fine! :)

be sure to send your SAT score to NMCorp #0085
