I’m a student at a decent university, and am interested in grad school, going to a more competitive university. The problem is my GPA is 2.99 at the moment and I’m entering my second semester of my junior year. I’ve failed 3 classes in the past and had to retake them, first time was freshman year I was advised to do so by dean to focus on other classes, and the next I got a concussion and fell behind. My current university isn’t challenging enough for me and I’ve taken it for granted letting my grades slide. I know the material in the courses but I just fail to do all the hw and extra work and it adds up, I also take relatively difficult courses and procrastinate (CS major). The university I currently attend has low motivation amongst its students compared to other universities I’ve visited, and it’s rubbed off on me. I’m typically the smartest person in the classrooms but my GPA doesn’t reflect that. I also like to sit in on other courses that I’m not taking and this has caused problems with time management. What are my options?
Earn A’s, and lots of 'em.
Well, it seems like you know what your issues are, so you need to turn to addressing them:
-If sitting in on other classes is an issue, stop doing that.
-Do your homework and the extra work.
-Try mixing your classes in difficulty - take some major classes along with some easier electives each semester.
-Find some friends with higher motivation. Every university has a mix of students, so even if there are fewer of them, they exist.
You can try to get as many As as possible. If you are angling for master’s programs, if you rectify your issues now and get your GPA above a 3.0 by the time you graduate, you could be competitive for some master’s programs. If you want to do a PhD, you may need to do a master’s program first, and/or take a few years before the PhD to work/do research.
