Grad School Comp. Sci. Admissions?

Hi all,

I am an undergraduate in Computer Science at a top 50 school (towards the 50s), and I will be graduating in Spring 2014. I am going to be applying for grad school for the following fall semester.

I have taken the GRE (Quant: 160, Verbal: 160, Writing: 4.0). And my GPA is 3.24/4 with a major GPA of 3.4. It is very hard to get As at my school, with no grade inflation and a strict grading system of A-B-C etc, so one bad CS grade brought it down from a 3.75 to 3.4.

I have done research with faculty throughout my sophomore year/junior year, half and half (I didn't think I did anything significant, but it was still an experience) and I am currently doing solid research project for credit this semester. I think I can get 3 strong LORs from Professors I've worked closely with.

I interned at a big company over the past summer as well.

I am on the boards of an engineering org and a CompSci org.

I guess my major question is, do you think I have a valid profile to get into a decent/good MS/phD program for Computer Science?

I feel like my GRE quant score could have been better. I got above 166 on all my practices, but I got a 160 on actual test day. I don't know how much that weighs against my other credentials. Would it be worth it to take it again?

I would love to get into a top 10 program, however I feel that in CompSci and for my interests, a top 20~40 program will be amazing as well, so I am not very particular. I am also looking to get financial aid in the form of a TA or RA throughout my graduate degree.

I would love to hear input and advice from people and would be happy to provide more information about my situation.

Respond soon! Thanks!

Sounds worth a try if you are able to find a research interest match with the professors at your target schools. The top 10 is probably unrealistic. Still there are so many respectable programs farther down the rankings. You at least need to identify an area of interest if you are going to apply for PhD.

If you do get accepted to PhD track programs, you will likely be offered tuition waiver and TA or RA position.

I don’t know about that Q score. I think overseas students will be expected to perform better than that, so I’d retake.
