I've heard that Midd has rampant grade inflation. To what extent is this true, and how does it reflect and affect campus culture? Does it relieve pressure? Provide an excuse for partying? Take the focus off the grades and onto the learning?

bump this up

yeah, what about for pre-med?

If there's grade inflation going on, I wasn't exactly on the receiving end this year... Midd is hard, work is intense, grades are what you deserve.

klink...how hard is it to get a good grade in English?

I'm with klink on this one. This school is incredibly hard. We have friends who whine and complain that they spent 8 hours per week at the library, whereas here, that's more of our typical day. I definitely know people who spend anywhere from 4-6 hours a night there, and have been guilty of it myself. There is no such thing as coasting to an easy grade here, and the majority of students are dedicated to their high quality of work and the grade that they get. The focus is very much on learning at Midd. I know I am making it sound like a terrifying, all work, stressed out place, and I'm sorry if I am scaring anyone away. In truth, most people here work so hard because they really want to learn and love their subject matter. In my experience, people here learn simply for the sake of learning, and not for the grade, which is the kind of atmosphere that I find desirable.

I'm a hard worker, it's just that I'm not a good study person, which is what scares me.

I completely agree with klink and elkhy. I just finished my first year and I'm not sure where the grade inflation rumor comes from. People here work extremely hard for their grades, they aren't handed to them. I've worked harder this year than anytime in my life for grades that aren't as good as I got in highschool. That being said, the Middlebury faculty is amazing and will help you in any way possible. There's also a tutoring center (which I will be working at next year, so come!) and the workload is definitely manageable. I would say succeeding at Middlebury is all dependent on your ability to manage your time, which I have become quite good at after this year.

Check this out. Middlebury has some of the toughest grading in the country.

i'm scared kind of now
