Prompt: In recent years, many schools have adopted a "Great Books"-based curriculum. These schools require students to study certain designated classic nooks of Western Civilization, arguing that familiarity with these "Great Books" is essential to education. However, opponents of this curriculum argue that forcing teachers and students to use only the "Great Books," most of which are written by white, European authors, results in a biased view on the world. In your opinion, should schools adopt a "Great Books"-based curriculum?

Essay:
Reading books in school is a crucial element used to educate kids. As a result, some schols have implemented a "Great Books" based curriculum in which students read and analyze classic books of Western civilization. Although these books are important, schools should implement the "Great Books" policy.
One reason schools should not adopt the "Great Books" curriculum is because it can lead students to have a biased view of the world. In today's globalized world, it is imperative for students to have a wide perception of the world. Reading books by white European men indirectly fuels students thoughts that the world is one dimensional. It is the school's duty to broadens students horizons and introduce them to different things.
Another reason this curriculum should not be implemented is because students will not enjoy reading them/ Students prefer to read contemporary novels like The Hunger Games, not Great Expectations. Although the classic books are important, they should not be the only books that are read in schools. Furthermore, reading only classic books in school will convince students that all books are boring and they will not want to read outside of school. Schools should encourage students to read by introducing them to different types of books.
On the other hand, supporters of the "Great Books" curriculum claim that studying classic books is essential to education. This argument is flawed because reading books in general is essential for education. By reading books, students will become more articulate and expand their vocabulary. This can be achieved through reading books in general, not just reading the classics. Classic books should be read in school; however, they should not be the only books being read
Overall, schools should not implement the "Great Books" curriculum. Rather, they should encourage teachers and students to read different types of literature in order to broaden their horizons. Introducing students to a wide variety of literature will help them gain a deep appreciation for books and will also help them more in the real world than the "Great Books" curriculum will.
