Grades for ivies

whats good enough for ivies in a 100 grade scale? can a 92 cut it?

I thought colleges only look at your over all GPA not every grade?

I really don’t think anybody can say with complete certainty because…

…there’s no single response to this.

There are a lot of matters–and this is one of them–about which you can’t say, “Colleges do X,” because colleges and universities don’t all do the same thing.

Some colleges and universities will invest your GPA with a lot of importance. Many of them will recalculate it by their own standard, whatever that standard may be (core academic classes only, weighting only for AP classes, whatever). On the other hand, there are also colleges and universities that will glance at the GPA your school calculated, but then really read your transcript.

For the most part, highly selective colleges and universities, including the eight of them in the Ivy League, tend to practice “holistic admissions.” They tend toward the read-your-transcript approach. When they’re reading your whole application, including your transcript, they’re trying to get a picture of who you are, not only in the classrooms and the labs, but also on the playing field or in the orchestra or at a mock trial competition. Then, after they’ve identified thousands and thousands of applicants who are academically qualified to receive one of a couple thousand admission offers, they start to assemble an entering class that they think will be interesting, diverse, accomplished, and a credit to (and, they hope, eventually generous to) the college. This is why they work so hard to find out who you are.

So, after all that…

it will depend a lot on what a 92 means in the context of your school. Does it put you at or near the top of your class, or are there a lot of other people in between you and that valedictory address at graduation?

If you go to a public school, you need mostly 97+
If you go to a very competitive private school, 92s might cut it.

… of course if you’re a minority, or have incredible hooks… 92s are just fine

^ Ummm, no. Sikorsky had the right response. If 80% of your HS class gets 93% or higher then your 92% will not cut it. There are some feeder HS which have a greater percentage going on to Ivies which relax some class rank criteria, but if you were in one of those you wouldn’t be asking this question. Your GCs would have already told you the answer.
