What's the grading scale like at Georgetown? Is it known to be a place where a good grade is hard to come by?

Depends on the class, but largely speaking, if you do your work and keep up, you can get a B no problem. A is hard to do here, you have to work your tail off (at least from my experience), but again it really depends on the class…

But in some cases like Econ and all MSB classes (beg. Fall 09), there is a mandatory curve, so it will be very tough to get an A/A-, because you competing with your peers for the 25% (Econ) and 30% (MSB) A/A-.

^ Great. I’m going to be in MSB next year… I wish it would just be if you got an A, you got an A, the end.

Well… that’s arguable, I mean how do you even define an A? Some professors already implement a soft curve (i.e. they will only give roughly 30% As, and generally curve up), but I can tell you that getting curved down sucks (which I have been in Business Law)…

But the idea is to fight grade inflation and make the students more competitive… in theory… we’ll see how it goes in practice…

Rabar, get pumped for the new building! It’s AWESOME!!!

Grading standards vary pretty substantially between schools and departments as at any school as well as between full-time faculty and adjuncts. According to the 2007 Intellectual Life Report, grades overall breakdown as follows:

A - 54.8%
B - 37.1%
C - 6.6/%
D - 1.0%
F - .5%

The language department gives out the most As - 67% while the social sciences, including the SFS give out the fewest 47%.

Granted, as mentioned in other posts, Gtown is actively working to minimize grade inflation through stricter department grading guidelines and implementing harder curves in some areas.

If you want more info on the stats, you can view the report at http://executivefaculty.georgetown.edu/Documents/Intellectual%20Life%202007/Intellectual%20Life%20Report%202007.pdf

^^ That building’s gonna be sick!

^ Well those numbers don’t seem too bad. I thought they’d be worse

Well, the MSB is officially going to be the hardest school to get As (statistically speaking) since it’s capped at 30% A/A-s… I personally think its a good thing (maybe not for my GPA), but for the school to become more competitive…

In terms of the grade distribution, I’d like to see the same data for some comparable schools to see if it is consistent across the board…

The econ curve sounds scary but in my experience, it will NEVER hurt you; trust me you will love that there’s a curve. I got a 54% on my micro final (50% of grade) and ended up with a B in the class, the percentages were that bad.
