Graduate Engineering programs with a focus in Energy and Power

I know this issue has been brought up in some of the posts from a few years ago but lots of new developments have taken place in this field and new programs have come up. I am still having difficulty finding good PhD programs that are directly involved in power/energy research especially in renewable energy sector.

Some of the ones I found are in EE department. For instance:

Univ. of Michigan has good PhD program through EE:Systems department and offers a concentration in Power and Energy.

Univ of Colorado - Boulder also has an Electrical, Comp Sci and Energy department with a good program but the deadline was Nov. 1. Oops!

It would be great if other students who are applying to PhD programs in this field would share their research/insights.

Pretty much every materials science department is going to have at least a few faculty members working on alternative energy projects.

Can you be more specific about what you mean by power and energy? Are you looking at devising novel devices like solar cells, batteries, or fuel cells? Chemical Engineering or Materials Science should be your best bet. Or are you interested in smart grid, power systems, power transmission? EE might be your best choice there. Or are you interested in modeling how our grid would adapt to new sources of energy, or how to create policy to best implement renewable energy?
