Graduate school advice?

Hello,

I’m (about to be) a third-year civil engineering student at The University of Texas at Austin. I have been thinking about whether I should continue my education after undergrad, and if so, what type of degree I would want to pursue. My major is really broad, and I have a pretty good idea as to what I would like to specialize in – the environmental side of engineering, rather than like structural, geotech, etc.

If I were to go to graduate school (and based on my interests), should I go into chemical engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering, ??? I know that I need to do some more research, but I figured I’d get some input from y’all. I have little over a year to decide, but it’s never too early to start thinking about it!

Also, feel free to discuss why you think graduate school may NOT be the best option.

Thanks!!

If you were to get a Masters in an area different than Civil, then Environmental is probably the best bet. Chemical Engineering is quite different from Civil and you would have a lot of remedial courses to take.

The best option, in my opinion, would be to take a couple of years to work and then decide what degree will further your career goals best. Having the work experience is important and from your message, you are not totally convinced of what advanced degree to pursue. This is a clear sign that getting work experience is the best choice.
