Graduate School Suggestions for MA in Psychology??

Hello everyone, I am currently a third-year student at CSUF. I’m a major in Criminal Justice and minoring in Psychology. I have a 3.45 cumulative GPA, 3.75 major GPA, 3.6 minor GPA. I currently work at a private practice for a Forensic Psychologist as a research assistant and plan on staying there to gain experience before applying to graduate programs. Do you guys have any suggestions on schools I should look at? Looking for forensic psych, general psych master programs, or clinical. I am open to moving out of the state of California and would love to hear your guy’s feedback!

Why do you want an MA in psychology? Are you doing it as preparation for a PhD in psychology? There are other, less expensive things that you can do to prepare - if you plan on staying on as a research assistant at a psychologist’s practice, that will help you out more, and you can always take a few graduate classes in your local area as a non-degree student if you feel you need to prove your mettle in psychology.

If you absolutely do want an MA in psychology, then I would recommend staying in California and getting it from a public university. It’s less expensive. MA programs in psych are rarely funded. Lots of Cal State campuses have one -check this out. CSULA has one in forensic psychology; Humboldt and Long Beach both have ones for preparing for academic research; lots of them have clinical or counseling and/or general.

If you’re just preparing for a doctoral program you don’t have to go to a fancy program. Most top schools don’t offer standalone MA programs anyway, so it’s better to save the money.

Hi, thank you for your input. I was thinking about staying in state as well. I was looking up information and most Cal State Universities only look at your last 60 units for prospective students. Luckily it was my freshman year I got a 2.8 GPA, and been on Deans list ever since. If I continue my trend I shall be around a 3.7. I currently have a couple interviews to work as a behavioral therapist for children with autism to stengthen my resume. I am looking at Cal Slo’s, CSULB, and SDSU’s programs. But CSUF of CSULA would be my safety school.
