Graduating Early/PSAT

If you child was going to graduate early, would you still have them take the PSAT their Junior, last year?

How would that work? :)

They can take PSAT their sophomore year, and notify the NMC that they are graduating early (the notification part can wait till AFTER you get the scores!). If you choose this route, make sure your child takes the real official PSAT (not something that your HS administers as a “practice” one).

If you missed that opportunity (or the score was not high enough), your child can take the PSAT in junior year. If it is high enough for NMSF, you will need to get the paperwork from the HS the following year, have your child fill it out and return to the HS. You also have to submit SAT score to NMC. This way your child will still be eligible for $2,500 NMC scholarship. If your child is a finalist, and goes to a sponsoring school, the school will almost always give the scholarship for the remaining 3 years. Some schools will also give one retroactively for the freshman year.

What happened with my kid is that she never took the PSAT in tenth grade as planned as we were called out of town unexpectedly due to my dad’s health (he was dying). Then, she decided to graduate early and took all the SATs and SAT Subject tests in spring of tenth grade. So, when 11th grade rolled around and she was applying to colleges, there was no way she wanted to take the PSAT as she was done with all her testing for college. Could not blame her.

Anyway, good advice above.

They can take it in their 3rd year of HS (counting grade 9) so if they take it junior year and then graduate, that is still okay. If they skip grade 9 or 10 or 11 officially and take in in grade 12, that is okay.

s, knowing he wanted to graduate early, took the PSAT in 10th grade and notified NMC of his intended graduation date. I believe, however, that it is possible to take the PSAT as a junior and still graduate early. The NMF designation is conferred when the student is already in college.
