Graduating in 3 Years

Over Thanksgiving my son mentioned he was considering graduating undergrad early, at 3.5 years. He is currently a junior who will be applying for fall 2014 med school admissions. I was going to ask if med schools would care if he graduated early, but found this thread which seems to suggest it won’t matter. His reason for an early graduation is to work and save money for med school. His school savings will not be huge. He is at a public university with a partial tuition scholarship. He will save $2600 plus whatever he earns working. I assume he would still live in his apartment, so no savings there. In fact, we use a 529 account to pay for tuition and his apartment. So, as I’m writing this I’m realizing he probably won’t be able to use the 529 for his apartment, if he isn’t in school. Anyone have experience with 529s? I guess I’d better check on all this before he decides. It may only make sense if he lives at home. That might be enough to keep him in school!

My husband is one who found medical school “easier” than undergrad. I think he is referring more to his state of mind during undergrad than he is to the level of difficulty of med school. He took two gap years before applying to med school. Once he was in med school he knew he was where he wanted to be and, for him, that made getting through it easier.
