graduation/birthday gifts

hey everyone, any good ideas on what to give to a new cadet--class of 2010!

Leatherman, phone cards, journal, 8X10 photo collage in durable plastic frame (if they still allow new cadets to have that) digital camera (but for AFTER Beast), just a couple ideas that are useful

Schades account. http://www.schadesrestaurant.com/. You call them and can set up an account your cadet can use to buy pizza, pasta, salads, ice cream, or whatever's on the menu. They deliver every half hour to Grant Turnaround, a fairly central point of the Cadet Area.

I love Schades. Try the sromboli!!!!

2 gave great suggestions.

I'd also suggest an account at Grant--I use that more than Schades. Digital camera is a really good one, too.

screw Schades, damn monopoly on the Highland Falls food market. The ONLY good thing about Schades is that they actually deliver on time, unlike Dong Fong and their 30 minute or more lateness.

I would say something more along the lines of what mpcptusma02 said, like a leatherman, you really do need those things all the time in the field.

We found that our plebe son valued the following items during his plebe year:

Mini-leatherman. His company let cadets use the mini, but not full size leatherman, during beast.

Liner Socks. Our son brought some black liner socks. Stuffed them in his extra pair of boots on R-day. Said they saved his feet when his cotton army socks got wet.

Gelpads for his low quarters. Our son said the boots were fine but standing around in the low quarters killed his feet. We sent the gelpads to him during Beast.

Digital Camera. Couldn't use during Beast but it seems the cadets like to captured everything on their cameras and then share with the other cadets. Also, its easier for them to send the photos than write letters. Many of the cadets love to post pictures on their Facebook webpages.

Underwarmour- shirts and underwear. Again, this was used after beast. Army issued whitie-tighties are the rule during beast. Shirts must be either white or army brown. Our son said the long Sleeve shirts and long underwear were great during winter months.

Top quality running shoes. Don't go cheap on these. The extra $50-75 will be money well-spent. Go to a running store that will fit your cadet's special needs.

A great big hug. One big enough to carry both you and your cadet through Beast.

Good luck to all the soon-to-be new cadets and the parents who made it all possible. My utmost thanks for your willingness to serve our great country.

thanks everyone! great suggestions
