Does anyone have suggestions on high end keyboards suitable for a dorm room?

You may want to ask the folks here [url=Music Major - College Confidential Forums]Music Major - College Confidential/url. Depends what your s or d is looking to get out of it. A serious pianist will want a full size with keys that respond as would a standard piano.

One other thing to consider besides space limitations is the school’s policy on instruments and/or practicing in dorm rooms. Some have stricter regs than others. Determine what you consider an acceptable $ loss factor, and add it to your kid’s insurance coverage as well if out of pocket replacement is an issue.

If there is a policy against practicing musical instruments in dorm rooms, you may want to ask whether it applies to electronic instruments where the student can use headphones.

The policy is based on noise and disturbing people. I don’t see how a keyboard with headphones would disturb people.

Our son has a Nord keyboard, which he adores. It’s not inexpensive, but we got a good deal on an expired model. Using the headphones, he can’t disturb anyone.

Thanks to all. My son is a good , high intermediate pianist but not a music major. He does some arranging too, but I don’t think he’ll have time for much at college. He’ll want something with 88 real, weighted keys, and we will pay for a good model, but it also has to fit into a dormroom. I’ll go see if I can find the policy on musical instruments before we actually buy anything as well.

I have some friends with keyboards in their rooms whom I just emailed asking about it. I’ll let you know when I hear back.

Everyone I’ve asked agreed that a Yamaha (specifically a motif) is the best, but a Sony would be fine if he’s not incredibly serious.

Make sure that it makes sense to have a keyboard in a room, especially if it will add travel logistics issues. In some cases, it would make more sense to use the college equipment.

My son goes to college 2000 miles from home. Although it was a pain, we did find a way for him to take his tenor sax on the plane. For piano he uses the practice rooms on campus. He has learned that late at night they are freely available.

If he were continuing to compose, he’d probably want a small/cheap keyboard in the room.

He is moderately serious, but he is also a cs/math major and will be plenty busy. He plays a really good piano at home. We’ll look into logistics when we do the accepted students visit this spring.
What about Yamaha P95s?
