Graduation

I know considering I haven't even decided on whether I'm going to Carleton for sure this may be a dumb question but...

I know Carleton takes up to 36 credits as an incoming freshman... does that make it possible to graduate in 3 years? I know it's usually not the most advisable thing to graduate in 3 years but I just want to see if its feasible...
if so, how often/have you heard of anybody who has?

I believe it may be possible if you look at the 3-2 program because you are getting a BA from Carleton and a BS from somewhere else. Then again I wouldn't know I am only planning to go there and I have not really explored the option.

Almost all courses are 6 units. 3x6 per trimester means that the max of 36 incoming frosh units completes 2 trimesters. You'll need 3 1/3 years of 18 units per trimester. Unless you get permission to take 4 classes (and live to tell about it) during any 3 remaining trimesters, you won't graduate in 3 years. Read the course catalog (it's on their website) to see if they allow transferring credits you might take at other colleges during the summers.

thanks alot, maize and icenine
i'll definetely look into that.
maize- the only reason i was wondering because there were some 4 units and 3 unit classes... and so i didn't think they needed 18 X 4 credits to graduate....?

Academic Progress: Carleton students are normally expected to complete their work in four years and may be dropped from the College if they have not earned at least 42 credits and a cumulative GPA of 1.8 at the end of three terms; 96 credits and a GPA of 1.9 at the end of six terms; and 150 credits and a GPA of 2.0 at the end of nine terms. (These are the lower limits allowed and do not indicate normal progress; that is closer to 54 credits, 108 credits and 162 credits, respectively.) For graduation, a minimum of 210 credits and a GPA of 2.0 is required.

Summer Study: Carleton does not ordinarily give degree credit for courses taken elsewhere during the summer. Permission may be given, if there are convincing academic reasons, but it must be requested in advance from the Academic Standing Committee, and the department chair may specify at that time that credit will be granted only upon special examination after the completion of the course. Petition forms for the approval of credit for summer courses may be obtained in the Dean of Students Office.

At 6 credits a course, that's 11.67 trimesters to fulfill the 210. Just 6 units shy of the regular full load of 18 per trimester. PE courses (1 unit) and some special project courses (1-6 units) are the only ones I could find that are not exactly 6 units.

thanks for the info Maize.
"Summer Study: Carleton does not ordinarily give degree credit for courses taken elsewhere during the summer. "
I do know there are a few Summer Carleton-affiliated (abroad) Programs (that possibly give credit?) soo maybe it is possible. I'll give the admissions office a call.
Thank you!
