This is probably going to silly but I am having difficulty with this question.

Opinions on Charles Ives as a composer (have always been split),(A) with some listeners regarding him as, (at best) (B), an entertaining eccentric, (while) (C) others lauding him as the (most influential composer) (D) composer of his age.

I picked E, no error but the answer is C, while.
Can anyone explain why "while" is unsuitable here?

"While" needs a different verb tense. It would need to be "while others lauded" him. But even that verb change wouldn't be correct because the sentence would not be parallel.

It should be "with some listeners regarding him . . . and others lauding him . . . "
