Grammatix or RocketReview???

Should I buy grammatix or RocketReview??? Which one do u think is better???

Hey, check out this thread.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=54210

I have both Grammatix and RocketReview. I believe they are both useful books, each with its strengths and weaknesses. Rocket Review tends to dwell for much to long rather than get straight to the point, which Grammatix does. This accounts for the difference in length between the two books. Rocket Review is around 700 pages, while Grammatix is under 200.

Rocket Review has a good writing section, with its common error review and strategies. Its reading section is also pretty good. The Math strategies are not very groundbreaking, as they are similar to those given by PR or Kaplan. The math material review seems fairly thorough, but I don't like the way the book completely shuns learning any formulas, and so often refuses to teach them to you.

Grammatix's forte is the Critical Reading section. It has good advice about the section in general, and then shows many important wrong/right answer patterns. Then there is a step-by-step process for answering the questions. He takes you through this process with real questions from CB's Blue Book. The book repeats this set of things for all the different question types on the SAT. For math and Writing, it teaches the basic grammar and math material on the SAT before looking at strategies. The Essay advice is good because it gives you a step-by-step process to follow. The weak part about Grammatix is the math advice, but the good advice for CR and Writing make up for it.

Overall, I think Grammatix is a better book. Rocket Review takes longer to trudge through, whereas Grammatix can be read in a day or two. I think Rocket Review would help students with mediocre scores the most, rather than already high scorers.

What do people think about Maximum SAT, by Pete "PeteSAT" Edwards? How does it compare to these two books?

do you know if i get a REA math 2 (SAT 2) book would it help me prepare for SAT I math or is that more for math I (SAT 2)..i bought grammatix and im interested in increasing my math and cr but not writing

i'll post some feedback on maximum sat soon. the book should be arriving in a few days.

Im intimidated to try Maximum SAT.. the cover looks so cheesy :(

i can sense a dont judge a book by its cover reply coming rite about now

dont judge a book by its cover

dang jsberting beat me too it! 0_o

well i disagree on the uneffectiveness of RR. I believe it is a very good book as long as u r willing to follow its strategies and practice them enough for u to be able to fluently use them. I found it helpful a lot. If i haven't mentioned previously this book was the key to my getting a 770. I had a score range in the late 600s before but this book really helped me to not hastily decide on the answer which i frequently did and got it wrong and would immediately know the right answer if i read it again. This was very frustrating and RR gave advice on the ways to comprehend the questions and passages quickly giving me enough time to check back. It has some obvious "oh stupid why didn't i know that," type of tips but i really would not have been calm enough to get that obvious tip if i hadn't used it. I can't comment about grammatix but i will say use both and choose whichever u like. RR worked for me but it might be different for u.

I have found that Maximum SAT does its best in the math section. However, many of the math strategies come directly from the PR course. (or maybe the other way around) Likewise, Max SAT's CR strategies are similar if not exactly the same as those taught in a PR course. I would also like to add that the essay section may be its weakest section. Thus, Grammatrix or RR would be a wiser choice if one were preping for specifically the essay. Overall I feel the book is good, but I have yet to finish it. The major downside is that if you've already taken a PR course then basically you would learn nothing new for M and CR.

But is PR the same as grammatix?

No...PR and Grammatix are different. I read PR's CR section and it doesn't compare at all to Grammatix's.

How is Max SAT's writing section? Also, how is its vocab list?

yay.................10chars

Flipsta_G, I haven't completed the writing section so I can't really evalute it. I'll try to finish it and post on the thread afterward. BTW, I've heard that you've been using Grammar Smart; is it the 2nd ed. one? Also did it help you significantly on the SAT W?

Yes, it is the second edition of Grammar Smart. It helped me on the SAT writing MC. I don't remember exactly how many I used to get wrong (probably 3-6), but now I usually get 0-1 wrong. I got 80 MC on the May SAT W (1 wrong/0 omit). I never actually learned grammar in school, so it helped me learn it and understand it easily.
