Grant on tax return

Hi, my daughter received grants for 2011-2012 school year. I filled my tax using an online program, and I reported my daughter's grants in my tax return. Now I am filling my daughter's tax return (she worked part-time). I do not report the grant to her tax return, right? The program is asking if she received any scholarship or grants. She did receive it but that has already been reported in my tax return since I'm the one paying her tuition. It's obvious that I have no clue about this...I'm Japanese! Any help would be appreciated!

You should not report them on your tax return. They are income to her, not to you, and are reported on her tax return. The fact that you are paying tuition is irrelevant.

Grants/scholarships that are used to pay for qualified education expenses are not taxable. Qualified expenses are tuition, fees, and required books. Grants used to pay these are not reported on her taxes. Grants/scholarships that are used to pay unqualified education expenses are taxable income to the student. Unqualified expenses include room and board, travel expenses etc.
