Hi! I'm currently a first-year studying global media (having to do with media in general) but would like to focus specifically on commercial design/advertising.

I wanted to originally but didnt have enough time to put a portfolio and my parents did not like the idea of me having a semester or the year off so I took the closest major I could get without being in the arts program.

Anyway, I'd love to transfer to a school but I wanted to know which schools focus more on commercial design (specifically advertising) rather than the fine arts aspect?

I was looking at VCUarts because it's a lot cheaper than Pratt's, etc. and money is becoming an issue for me. I also hear transfer students get less finaid/scholarship consideration so yeah ^^;;

Thanks!

are you going now to giant all service university?
chances are you have an art dept and design major already, that you might get in after portfolio review and/or talking to profs soph year.
to learn practical skills, you don’t have to go to art-art school. there are many trade schools and online tutorial do just that.
it is good to know all kind of other things; how to write right, marketing, money counting, global thinking stuff - when you can still learn. I will look into what options you do have at hand first.

bears,

thanks so much. i’m currently attending a small private university. the art dept is good but with the price i’m paying i’d rather go to a better school. on top of that, the art dept focuses more on fine arts/traditional arts than it does commercial design. i looked at VCUarts and it’s actually cheaper AND better than my current school in the art dept (and also focuses on advertising) but would like more options to consider.

i also definitely dont mind not going to an art school (like risd, pratt, etc) because they tend to be more expensive anyhow. however, if i could even get into a very high-ranking, prestigious art school, that’s a different story!

how about Artcenter?
or have to be East coast-sh?

honestly doesn’t matter where! i’m from the west so its closer to home but im in the east right now anyway so i think distance isnt a factor anymore.

thanks for the recommendation for artcenter. ive never heard of it until now, how weird!

do you know how well this ranks in job recruiting following graduation?

can’t beat. top notch. If only you can get in and stay in.

hi bears,

do you have any more information on commercial/communication design (specifically focused on advertising or something)?

i am going to apply to a few schools that i think will fit me, but would like to have back-ups if the top reaches don’t accept me. and it definitely seems like art center is a reach if they are top notch.

thanks!
