GRE Scores for Biosciences

Hello everybody,

I just took the GRE today and I wasn't sure how to feel about my scores. I got V:590 Q:730. I know these scores aren't bad, but they're also not good... they're just meh

Some background about me I'm a rising senior at my state's flagship research university. I'm planning on applying to graduate school in the biosciences for Fall 2013 admission. I know people that I would be really excited to work for at both Harvard and Stanford and I know that these particular bioscience programs are obviously highly competitive.

I'm currently working in a research lab and I will probably have worked there for 2.5 years by the time I apply to grad school. We have one publication coming out that I will be on and there is a definite possibility of a second. I'm a biology major and I anticipate my GPA at graduation to be at least 3.9. My PI now will definitely give me a strong recommendation as he has strong connections at both Harvard and Stanford and I have 3 other letters lined up that should all be great.

As far as my interests go I'm primarily interested in evolutionary developmental biology/ genetics so I'll probably be applying to mostly molecular biology/genetics programs.

I'm sorry if this info is presented in an awkward way. I'm not applying for awhile (I just took the GRE so I didn't have to take the new one) and I'm not sure about all my info.

Ultimately should I take the new GRE or are these scores going to be okay?

Your GRE is fine. I scored lower than you overall (albeit with a higher Q, but a 730 is in no way a deal-breaker), and I was admitted to all the top biosciences programs.

There are more meaningful ways of improving your application over the next year than retaking the GRE.

Krypt or anyone who could give me advice

At first, sorry Michael1 for using your thread but I have a similar question. I’m a international candidate and I’ll be applying to Biosciences Phds as well. In my first attempt, I got 730Q/450V. In order to increase my chance to get admitted, I decided to improve my GRE score (especially the verbal one) by retaking the test. However, besides not improving my verbal score, I actually lowered my quant score (just got 650). I think my best shot is to retake the test in its new format.

Any suggestions?

hello michael1, your profile sounds almost the same as mine when I applied last year. I even had the same total GRE score (although my verbal was little lower and quant little higher). anyway, don’t worry at all about the GRE score, the rest of your application is more important (and appears to be very strong).
