Great Composite Ruined by Essay Score :(

Hey everyone,

So when I finally got my scores today morning, I saw the 35 Composite and went through the roof! Then I scrolled down to the essay score, and saw a big fat 9 :(

Considering the fact that I'll be applying to HYP, should I retake just for the essay score? My combined English/Writing score was a 32.

Oh, and sorry if i'm being really uptight about this...i'm not quite sure what's good and what's not.

no. they dont care about the essay. risking going down for an unimportant essay score is ridiculous

oh and i forgot to mention: if i asked for a rescoring, what are the chances i'll be bumped up to a 10?

bump please...any opinions would be nice

CES, I really don't think you should worry about that essay score. Essay being bumped up to a score of 10/12 from 9/12 won't really make that much of a difference. It is suggested that you should focus your attention and worries somewhere else, because seriously - would that 1 point make that much of a difference?

I believe that 9 is still a good score, and furthermore your 35 composite is very good. I don't even have my scores yet and I'm so frustrated...

cyborg, the only thing i'm worried about is going from a 9/12 to a 10/12 equals going from the 88 percentile to the 97 percentile...

please comment if you have any experience with act handscoring! also, does anyone know if adcoms actually read the essays, since they're made available? or do they just look at the grade?

What are the chances that you'll get bumped down to an eight?

what the **** is this?

9 is great, and 35 is amazing.

No offense, but just shut up and appreciate that you have a 35. A 9 is nothing to laugh at. :/

dude, I'm in the same situation as you, lol. I made a 35 composite on december act, and a 9 on essay. I was debating with retaking but decided against it. A 35 is crazy, and retaking it wouldn't be very smart. So my current opinion is that of laurstar07. Congrats on the 35 :)

wow, now there are three of us in this thread who got the same grade! I got a 35 with a 9 on writing last April! crazy!
I agree that it's no big deal, besides the fact that you got a great composite, which is very nice! if it's any encouragement, I'm going to an Ivy next year, and while I know it wasn't as though the ACT score carried my whole app, I am sure it didn't hold it back at all. :)

thanks for the reassurance, swameegunta and faustarp :)

and mika, i apologize if i seemed too pretentious...

I clicked on this thread with the expectation that you would actually get a bad score--not a 9. There's nothing to worry about.

^ Sorry, matus, it seems that they don't really care what you say. They want a 10 on the essay score or higher :| Gee, I wish I could get that..
