does anybody know if pitzer's writing department is any good?

Thanks to all the people who responded to this post. It is really really helpful.

Best of luck in your pursuits!

University of Iowa has a KILLER graduate creative writing program. I'm not sure what the deal is there for undergrads. Their grad program's excellence may lead to a great undergraduate program via osmosis. :-) Yale has incredibly strong humanities in general, with several verrrrry famous English professors. I think it's better in literary analysis/criticism than creative writing per se. Barnard has a proud tradition of producing excellent writers, so that's emphasized there. I think a lot of the seven sisters would be good bets, actually. Columbia just introduced a creative writing major that might be cool to look into (and they produced Jack Kerouac!). As has already been said, Kenyon is probably one of the best bets. You'll have to look carefully, though, at the specifics of each school's English department. Some are great at analysis but weaker in creative writing.

I'd like to second (or third... or fourth... or fifth) Kenyon for strong English and CR. Also, Brown's Literary Arts Dept. might be worth looking into, and Knox College is surprisingly well-known for its Creative Writing. Johns Hopkins is also good.
