I’m looking for a liberal arts college and was interested in colgate, bucknell, etc. I’m worried about the influence of greek life at these schools and was wondering what social life is like for someone who is not involved in greek life. Are events usually inclusive and is it harder to have a social life not being involved?
If it’s a concern, there are many LACs with no Greek life or minimal Greek life. I believe at Colgate and Bucknell, Greek life is pretty big and dominates the social scene, although every school has activities on the weekends for those who don’t want to drink and go to parties.
There are many, many small liberal arts colleges that do not have any fraternities or sororities, including many of the top-ranked ones. If you do not want Greek life, you should have no trouble finding many colleges without it.
At Colgate, Greek Life definitely dominates the social scene. And the apathetic, privileged students from wealthy suburbs dominate the culture. I love it here, but our social life sucks, especially if you don’t like greek life. It’s totally toxic and problematic. Great professors, though!
Greek life is very big at the two schools you mentioned.
Echoing what people above have said. There are lots of LACs with no Greek life, or Greek life that’s less traditional and doesn’t dominate the social scene. Are there compelling reasons to have Colgate and Bucknell at the top of your list? Because there are lots of great LACs where this would not be an issue at all.
