Greek life at Lehigh

Hi i was wondering if a current student could tell me about greek life at lehigh (particularly sororities). I already know lehigh is a great school and offers an excellent education; now i want to know more about the social life there. How big is the average sorority? is it like 40 girls or are there 100+ girls in a single sorority? Do sororities have brother frats? What does a typical night out consist of? are there any bars nearby that students frequent? I would appreciate any insight you have to offer! Thanks!

Hi, My son is in a fraternity so I won’t be much help. If no one answers this post I would recommend you just call the Greek Life office. They would be more than happy to connect you to a student. Any time I have ever called Lehigh with a question everyone has been so helpful. Good luck!

I’m a freshman here at Lehigh who is planning on rushing next semester, so I might be able to answer your questions.

Lehigh has 22 fraternities and 9 sororities, so on average there are more members in each sorority than fraternity. The average fraternity has 45 members and the average sorority has 59. You can see specifics here: https://studentaffairs.lehigh.edu/sites/studentaffairs.lehigh.edu/files/offices/ofsa/docs/Occupancy/Copy%20of%20Occupancy%20ChartbyclassFall2013.pdf

Some sororities have brother frats, however from what my experience tells me it varies from year to year. Some pledge classes get closer than others no matter who, if any, is your actual ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ house.

As a first semester freshman’s night out would be going to an off campus fraternity house around 10:30/11:00 (owned usually by a senior in said house) where the fraternity will ‘invite’ a sorority over. Most of the parties are either on East 5th or Hillside Ave, which are both one block from campus so it is not uncommon to attend 3 or 4 parties in one night. As a freshman, your goal is usually to ‘shop around’ all the different houses and find ones where you fit in. Where do you have the most fun, where do you get along with the brothers/sisters the best, where are your friends going? Those questions help define where you rush as a second semester freshman. Very rarely will parties be on the hill in the actual fraternity houses first semester because the administration has really cracked down these last few years, but that doesn’t out a damper on anything.

The bar scene is almost non existent as a freshman. I personally have never been to one nor know of any of my friends going to one. There is no need got a fake ID on campus either. All the liquor shops in town have lists of underage students most of the IDs wouldn’t work anyway. There is no need to go, plenty of alcohol at the off campus parties every night. A few seniors go during the week, but that’s not really a part of the social scene.

Hope I helped answer some of your questions! Let me know I can help at all.

thanks for your reply it was very helpful! What are the reputations of some of the sororities?

Im a guy so my opinions may not be what you are looking for.

However, I wouldn’t go into recruitment with ‘reputations’ in mind. Sure, some people may thing that AGam is the hottest, but others may think that title belongs to DG, AXO, or Theta (no one really thinks Theta is the hottest). The first half of first semester is all about getting out to as many places as you possibly can. Meet every sorority (you can skip Theta) and try to get to know some girls from every place. Who cares what others think about the sorority?

If you end up pledging a sorority because of their reputation you are not going to have a fun 4 years. Go where you fit in, where you feel accepted, and where you have the most fun with the girls (and go where your friends are going, you want to be best friends with your pledge class).

i guess i should’ve worded my question differently. i wasn’t asking which sorority was the “hottest” or “coolest”, but rather that they are down to earth people that like to have fun. I have heard that many of the sororities at Lehigh are shallow and don’t really care about being friends. I like to go out and have fun and i definitely want to do greek life, but i don’t want a bunch of fake ppl who only care about social standing

Your right about many sororities here seem (at least from the opinions I’ve been given by girls) that they only care about social standing. However the answer to who is the most ‘down to earth’ is definitely going to change depending on who you ask. Personally, I would say Alpha Phi (APhi) is the sorority that has a great time while at the same time being very friendly and easy to get along with. But I could think that because a few of my friends are at Lehigh rushing them now (girls go back a week early to rush).

Another problem is that every sorority has a wide range of girls. Is usually varies by pledge class, but some will be what your looking for and some won’t.

Hope this helps  keep the questions coming

My d is considering Lehigh for engineering. At this point, I don’t think she has a strong opinion either way about the Greek system. I enjoyed sorority life as a college student many years ago so I hope she will seriously consider it. Can anyone speak to how sorority rush at Lehigh went this year? Were there many girls who did not receive a bid at the end of rush?
