Greek Life

Hey I'm deciding whether or not do be apart of greek life and I was wondering if you could answer a few question.

For one, how nice are the houses? I visited Auburn and the houses there are crazy! Just wondering if it is the same type thing?

Also is rushing first semester? And if so do you have to go down early to rush?

Last but not least, how intense is it? Is greek life at FSU really down south and one of those things that they will make you do really ridiculous things during rush and abide by insane rules when you do join? Thanks Go Noles!

By your user name I assume you are looking at frats not sororities, correct? If so, I can’t help you. If you’re looking for sororities I can assist.

I can answer some from my son’s experience. some of the frats have really nice houses, some have chapter houses in Heritage Grove. there is fall rush and spring rush. there will be a preview where all the frats present and you can visit all the houses. I think if my son had it to do over, he might have waited to rush in the spring when he got to know about the frats better. some don’t make you pledge at all. none are supposed to haze but I’ve heard some do.

I can confirm that some of the frats do haze HARD. And they consider it a badge of honor the harder the hazing. It’s not right and should not be going on but if you join one where you are not hazed then you are called a pansy, etc. for not being willing to do ridiculous things for your brotherhood.

but there are all types…depends what you are looking for. if you look for a group of guys that you have something in common with and want to spend time with then don’t worry about being called a pansy.

I totally agree with wtztu - I didn’t mean for it to appear that you should go along with hazing. I just meant that’s the kind of garbage that gets said about young men that want to act like young men and not animals.

janna-- do the sororities haze a lot? I heard so many horror stories especially from FSU. this is a concern cause I wouldn’t want to be friends with people who did stuff like that to me. If it’s not true I am almost 100% that I want to rush.

I’m hoping the horror stories you have been hearing are from quite some time ago. The Panhellenic sororities are not allowed to haze at all. It is severely frowned upon and any sorority found to be hazing is severely punished. I cannot speak for all the sororities because I do not know for sure what all 16 houses do but I know that my daughter was not hazed in any way at all. None. Zero hazing. And, honestly, I’d be surprised if any of them do any type of malicious hazing. She never heard of any of her friends in other sororities being hazed either.
