Hey everyone! I’ve heard that Greek life at W&M is really good (especially in terms of sororities; I am female), but I’ve also heard that joining a sorority and staying in it can be super expensive. I come from a relatively low-income family and was wondering how accessible W&M sororities would be to me. Thanks in advance!
I was in a similar situation freshman year except lower middle-income and male. I’m currently in a fraternity and have tons of friends in sororities. Each organization tries to make it as easy as possible for its members to pay their dues. Lots offer payment plans and some even offer scholarships to help cover the costs! Being in Greek life isn’t inexpensive, but the cost is bearable if you budget properly and get an on-campus job. During rush, you should definitely ask about dues at each sorority you visit because all will have different plans and none will cost the same.
If you have the opportunity, I 100% recommend going Greek! Greek life is tremendous here.
@betweenthetrees Thank you so much!
Hi, I was also wondering if any current W&M students on here are in sororities; I’m interested in joining Greek life next year but don’t know what to expect! I was just accepted Friday so I’m excitedly deciding what I want to do on campus!
Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore at WM currently; I joined a sorority freshman year and I’m currently on the Panhellenic Executive Board and it’s been a wonderful experience.
In terms of cost, all chapters are comparable. Your first semester will cost around $600 which includes normal dues, new member fees, and the cost of your sorority pin. After that, all chapters' dues are between $300-350 a semester. Expect to spend around $100 across the span of the year to pay for mandantory apparel as well (for example, matching shirts worn during recruitment, at philanthropy events, etc). All chapters offer payment plans and other aid that helps make it affordable, though! WM Greek life is extremely affordable considering dues for many chapters at UVA are over $700 a semester.
Greek life here is really unique in that there's a place for everyone-- there's not a stereotypical "sorority girl" and recruitment is far more relaxed than at other schools. You can choose your level of involvement which is nice. Some girls make their sorority their main focus, but if you're heavily involved in other activities and don't have much time for optional events, that's perfectly normal too. It's not uncommon for people to wait until sophomore year to go through recruitment, too.
Feel free to message me if you have any other/more specific questions!
