Anyone know anything about Greek life, specifically, what the sororities are like?

Bump.....anyone???

Hi apes89!

I am the Vice President of Civic Engagement on Greek Council and I am also Vice President of Zeta Tau Zeta for the upcoming semester. Greek Life at Occidental is very different from larger schools. It is based more on each person's personality and where they would best fit in, and not just trying to get as many people as possible into an organization. Oxy has 4 sororities and 4 fraternities, one of which is co-ed (Zeta).

Sororities:
Alpha Lambda Phi Alpha (Local)
Delta Omicron Tau (Local)
Kappa Alpha Theta (National)
Sigma Lambda Gamma (National)

Fraternities:
Kappa Alpha Psi (National)
Phi Kappa Psi (National)
Sigma Alpha Epsilon (National)
Zeta Tau Zeta (Local, Co-ed)

One sorority is closed-bidding (Theta), and all fraternities are closed-bidding. Closed-bidding is when the organization decides to offer bids to people who are rushing that they would like to join their organization. In open-bidding organizations, bids are offered to all those rushing.

If you are entering Oxy as a first year you have to wait until second semester to rush, but if you are entering as a transfer you can rush first semester. There will be a Meet the Greeks event during O-Week (Orientation) where you can meet members from all of the organizations in one place and ask them questions in a no pressure environment. If you would like more information on Greek Life, visit the Greek Council website, where you will find links to information on Greek Life in general at Oxy and links to individual organization's websites. Also, if you have any questions feel free to send me a PM!
